Summer placement, Student Engineer

Joined Andrew Scott Ltd: 27/05/2013 – 02/08/2013 -
Why did you choose Andrew Scott Ltd?

I had been informed from numerous people of the opportunities offered by the Company for students such as myself. I wanted to gain good experience that would help me at University and Andrew Scott seemed to have completed a variety of different and well known projects. I felt this would give me a good overall feel for the industry I have chosen to work in.

What projects have you recently worked on?
The most recent and on-going project I have been doing a lot of work on is the Connect 2 footbridge in Hereford. Further to this, I have looked at other jobs Andrew Scott are currently contracted for. These include projects such as Cardigan Castle, Margam Abbey, and Glatfelter in Caerphilly.

What do you enjoy about your job?
Not only do I love the area of industry I am working in, but the people who work within the Company have been a joy to work with. The staff are very helpful and friendly and I have learnt a lot from them. I love how diverse the company is and all the opportunities I have had to see so many different projects underway. The most rewarding part about this placement has been how much I feel my understanding and knowledge of the industry has been enhanced.

What is your best achievement at Andrew Scott Ltd.?
I feel I have learnt so much whilst on placement here which would probably represent what I feel as my best achievement. Not only have I learnt things with regards to structural design and calculations, but I have greatly improved on my AutoCAD and Microsoft project skills, which I have realised, are so essential when working as an Engineer.

What training opportunities have Andrew Scott offered you?
Going out on site visits has been a great opportunity for me. I have been able to engage with office staff and site workers. They have offered me a great insight into the many sectors of work available.

What are your future aspirations?
I hope to complete my final year and graduate from University. I am considering doing a Master’s degree in the industry but will still have to give it a lot of thought. Otherwise I wish to keep developing myself after I graduate by working for a good company. I hope to become a fully qualified engineer and work towards becoming chartered.
