£1.5 million investment in Haven Enterprise Zone to create 100 jobs
Building is now underway of a new £1.5 million pound boat building fabrication hall at Pembroke Port – the first major investment in the Haven Waterway Enterprise Zone. The new facility, being built for Mustang Marine following nvestment by the Port of Milford Haven, is set to double the size of workboat construction operations and create more than one hundred jobs at Mustang Marine in response to growing demand from around the world.
The expansion is the second and most ambitious part of a phased development in the historic former Royal Dockyard that in its illustrious 200 year history has launched five Royal Yachts and more than 200 Royal Navy vessels. Mustang Marine has carried forward this workboat-building pedigree for more than thirty years, sending orders as far afield China and Africa. It’s hoped the expansion will see their operations double in size in the next three years.
Kevin Lewis, founder and Managing Director of Mustang Marine, which builds and repairs workboats, pilot boats, passenger and commercial vessels, said: “This is fantastic news for the local economy. Once these buildings are completed we expect to at least double the number of jobs from the more than one hundred skilled men and women we have here today. Our company has been built up by the Lewis family and through investment in people, technology and facilities has gone from strength to strength in terms of physical resources as well as financial stability.”
Alec Don, Chief Executive of the Port of Milford Haven, which is Mustang’s partner in the expansion and owner of Pembroke Port, had high praise for the workboat builders. “Mustang Marine is a world leader. They are exactly the kind of business this Port needs and we are keen to help them develop and grow their business. We are also calling for businesses operating in the renewable energy industry to come and make the most of the Port’s outstanding facilities and the Haven Waterway Enterprise Zone created by Welsh Government.”
One of the most prominent on the West Coast, the Port is in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the only Coastal National Park in Great Britain. It is marked as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and has many areas designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The Port of Milford Haven is a trust port – an independent, commercially run organisation that has statutory responsibilities governed by its Acts, to maintain and improve navigation and the provision of Port and Harbour services and facilities. Additionally, the Port provides significant financial and in-kind support to a wide variety of local causes. All profits are retained within the business to fund these objectives.
