Andrew Scott were awarded the design and build contract for redevelopment works at Rodney Parade. Our works included the demolition of the existing Argus standing spectator terrace and replacement with a new, 2,526 seat Corporation Road Stand to house a 2 storey function suite, hospitality boxes, catering kitchen, club shop, ticket office, and reception area. Concession areas and bars on the ground and first floors were in addition to the function rooms. Additionally, we undertook re-cladding works to existing Hazell Stand in order to improve the overall view of the ground along with the design and build of a new standing terrace area at the northern end of pitch..
The existing Rugby stadium was of traditional construction bounded in close proximity by terraced housing, businesses, a school and other Newport Gwent Dragons facilities including multi-sports buildings, squash courts and offices. The existing stadium remained in operation during construction.
Being adjacent to the River Usk, a new drainage headwall was created in addition to comprehensive Environmental Management Plan being drawn up to ensure no accidental leakage into river.
A major issue that we faced on the site was space (or rather the lack of it). The new stand backed onto Corporation Road, one of the busiest roads in Newport, and deliveries had to be planned well in advance so as to avoid rush-hours in the area. Through effective management of our supply chain and early contractor involvement we were able to successfully plan works and schedule orders so as to maintain a smooth workflow.
During the design phase, and in consultation with the Ground Staff, we devised and installed a rainwater harvesting system that collected storm water in tanks and subsequently pump distributed it over the pitch in 4 separate areas. This system not also increased the efficiency of the irrigation process but also reduced the level of drainage discharge by some 90%.
